Anyone live close to Gatwick Airport or Travelodge ?

Hi All

My wife and I are going away from December 28th 2009 (6.00am) to February 6th 2010 (10.30pm) - and are due to fly from Gatwick.

We've looked at various parking companies but the cost in over £200.

So, we wondered whether any forum members live close to Gatwick Airport or Gatwick Travelodge and fancy earning a few quid by letting us park on their drive (nice area please :grinheart) for the approx 6 weeks.

Thanks
Paul

Hello - I'm a bit too far away for you to park on my drive.

    Take a look at http://www.parkatmyhouse.com/uk/parking/gatwick-airport/

Quite a few people who do offer there drives at costs a lot lower than the standard car parks!

I had heard of that website but couldnt remember the name.

TBH, the pople advertising on there are having a laugh - many are charging £5/day to park on their drive when you can stay at a secure site for less than £4/day.

Ive found a hotel which can do a double room before we fly (with cont b/fast as early dept), approx 6 weeks parking with airport transfers and a double room when we get back (inc full english b/fast) for under £180.

That roughly works out at £4.50/night.

I was hoping to find a money-saver who could offer their drive for something like £1/night to make it worthwhile doing.

If something happened to your car while you are away, stolen or damaged perhaps who are you going to blame? £1 a night for a stranger to park on your drive for six weeks, I think not.

How much would a taxi (or train) cost compared to Parking?

TBH £200 for six weeks parking is cheap, you can pay £50/£80 for one week at most airports, it is a bit of a cheek to expect someone to let you leave a car on their property for six weeks for a £7 a week.

I would probably try and see if you could get there some other way instead of using the car.You might get more suggestions if you could let us know where you are travelling from.

Unfortunately, the car is the only option.

We leave Burnham-on-Sea Somerset on Dec 23rd and go to the edge of Cheltenham to drop off our Motorhome. We then go to Birmingham for Christmas.

From there, on the 28th, we go to Gatwick for our flight at 06.15 on the 29th. We get back at 22.00 on Feb 6th and have to collect the motorhome, before heading back to Burnham.

So, trains are out of the question (and you cant book yet anyway).

TBH guys, I was thinking that a Money Saver might appreciate the logic behind my request and just might like to earn £50 for practically doing nothing; if they have a spare bit of driveway.

If everyone on here gave away something which is not costing them anything, but which would be highly prized by the receiver, we would all benefit.

    Bring back bartering.

personally I think £180 for a hotel the nights before and after your flights plus 6 weeks parking is an outstanding deal - especially as your departure flight is very early and your return flight is very late...it will make a much more relaxing start and end to your journey, I would expect. We don't pay a lot less than that to park for 9 nights and stay at the Gatwick Hilton the night before our flight.

While I might let a close friend or family member park in our drive (if we lived near an airport, which we do not) I don't think I'd let a stranger...to much potential for something to go wrong for my liking.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Yep, I agree that £180 is great for what it covers; and that's probably what we will go with.

But, we can get the Travelodge for £19/night and (if we can park the car close to Travelodge) get the coach to/from the airport for £3pp e/w. All that would cost us £50.

If we could get the parking on someones drive for £50, it would save us £80 in total.

Add £20 for breakfast (2 mornings at £5pp) and we would still save £60.

Surely, saving £60 (or 33%) is what MoneySavingExpert is all about - or perhaps Im missing something :D
