BT insisting my line is dead

My housemate wants to install Sky HD and rang Sky but they said they have to have a phone line. My housemate rang BT to confirm the line was active and they've said it's dead. We have broadband and can order films through sky box office so it's obviously active. I've since checked my direct debits and nothing has come out at all despite setting it up when I moved in October last year, what can I do?!
