Fee for unpaid cheque - Can anyone help?

I sent a cheque for £190 to one of my sisters recently but unfortunately I wasn’t aware that there wasn’t enough funds in the account - I had £182 in my account. So as you can guess the cheque bounced and the bank sent me a statement for a fee for an unpaid cheque. The fee is £30 in total.

Can anyone tell me, does the same apply for bounced cheques in the same way as asking for a refund of an overdraft? Is it possible to ask for this back? And what should I do to ask for it back?

Should I write a letter using the template in Martin’s bank charges reclaiming article or should I phone and ask for the money back?

I went overdrawn before the bank charges reclaims were put on hold when I was with Coventry Building Society and I phoned them as it was the first time. I asked for a refund and they gave me back the amount for going overdrawn. So hopefully my bank will give me my money back with any luck by just asking for it over the phone.

Thanks very much, I’ll keep you informed if I do get this back.

Phoned my bank around 3pm this afternoon and asked for a refund. The guy on the other end of the line asked the usual questions, then went to have a word with his manager and said they’d deduct the fee from my account. Brilliant!!

    Thanks Nat
