European motor insurance cover

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere - I couldn't find it.
Do you have to stick with your own insurer if you want to add on European cover. My insurer does not include it automatically within the premium. What are the options. We are going away to France, Italy, possibly into Croatia.
Seeing that I'm here I would also like an up to date list of Breakdown cover for Europe, though an earlier thread did suggest ADAC. Thank you.
