Leaving aside the health issues, if you can go down there and get close to the transformer late at night, when it's all quiet, then do so - and come back and tell us - could you live with a constant HUM in your life? Would you be able to sleep if the HUM was audible when you go to bed? Would the HUM interfere with you watching/listening to the TV, or listening to some quiet music?

I suppose the way to look at is not "Would I live there?" but "Would this put off someone else buying the property off me?". You never know when you may need to sell.

I've been reading the above with interest - the property we are hoping to buy has an electricity sub-station next to it. The survey said it might put people off due to possible health risks but I hadn't thought too much about it. The possibility of a hum had not crossed my mind! Is a sub-station as concerning as a transformer or pylon? Cheers.

I dont know if this helps but where i live, they have started taking down some of the pylons, what they have done with the wires i dont know, but it might be worth seeing if this is a possibility for in the future where this property is. I dont know who you would need to ask, but the house prices in the area we lived by went up by about £20k, once the pylons had gone HTH

    They put them underground.

We have looked at a couple of houses. One had a pylon 50 feet or so away and another had a sub station nearby. We walked away. I have 2 small children and I couldn't risk having them exposed to anything that MIGHT cause illness. I was told that the pylon might be buried when some new building started a mile or 2 away but I wouldn't want to live there just incase it didn't happen.

The transformer in your photograph is a very common sight in country areas, being frequently found next to farms. Ironically, the price of those farms would be well beyond the reach of many who are making disparaging remarks here about 'selling blight!'

Having made myself highly popular, I'll just add that it doesn't seem to be that close to the house if that's the bottom of the garden in the distance. These step-down transformers don't make as much hum as a full size sub-station, but it might be worth retuning there to check this on a calm evening.

Power lines like these are very different from the 132 000volt lines that traverse the country as the National Grid. Those fizz, and not many people like to live close to them, perhaps with good reason.

Dodgy's EMF tester will settle the matter though, provided its readings can be interpreted, and while it's not cheap, it seems a small price to pay for information/ peace of mind. Better than anyone's opinion here, including mine.

Are there really proven health issues? Or just supposition and co-incidence?

Surely, if there were very real health issues, thousands of people in the country would be at risk and something would be done?

cancer! I'd not even consider a house near crap like that. Houses should not be allowed in the vicinity of those things. Is it any wonder everyone is dropping dead of cancer all around us?
