  • Depends on what you want. Clearspring is good, available from many places, Waitrose do quite a few own label things too.

Other than that, Wing Yip or any Oriental supermarket.

Now is really not a good time to be buying Japanese - their money was invested conservatively, so has not gone down like everyone else in the world - Japanese food is going to be really expensive wherever you buy it. I would suggest buying Japanes-y food - i.e. American sushi rice, Japanese style soy sauce from China etc.

JapanCentre really is the best. Wing Yip or another local oriental supermarket might be slightly cheaper, but the variety is usually poor - those usually tend to be Chinese-focused and while there is some crossover, you won't get the same diversity & range of products that Japan Centre offer. That said, I've gotten umeboshi puree (Clearspring brand) from Sainsbury's that is way cheaper than Japan Centre and it's scrummy!

I've never found anywhere better or cheaper than the Japan Centre; they get regular orders from me as I got converted to a mainly Japanese diet some time ago, I also have an Oriental Supermarket about 10 minutes walk away (lucky me!) which I use for oddments but to be honest price wise it's cheaper to buy on line.
