guaranteed credit card but .... refused.

Hope someone can explain this one to me. I bank with Halifax and was repeatedly offered a 0% balance transfer credit card with them, in fact I was guaranteed to be accepted. I applied, and was refused. When I questioned this I was told I had failed their credit scoring. Am i being naive or what? I thought guaranteed meant well how can i put it ... guaranteed. I currently have a complaint in to have this refusal removed from my credit file, as up until now it has been clear and very good.

Whilst I do understand your grievance completely, I think you will find that the Terms and Conditions of the offer will cover themselves by saying that the offer is guaranteed on the basis that you meet their acceptance criteria.
Sneaky or what

Thanks Nickx. But this invitation appeared on my accounts page on the halifax internet banking site. I have a print out here. There is no reference to terms and conditions or acceptance critirea. It is there in black and white. We guarantee to accept you...... I am sure your'e right that somewhere along the line, buried deep, they have an opt out. But surely if thats the case the term 'guaranteed' should not be used, or if so if there are conditions that should be made clearer.0

It's not quite that bad.
The credit reference agencies do not record credit card refusals, only credit checks.
Credit checks are viewed as negative only if you attract too many in a short space of time. These entries drop off your file after 12 months, so even this effect is fairly short-lived

I agree it's an abuse of the English language. The term "pre-approved" crops up a lot as well.
All the banks are at it, so you can bet there's a get-of-jail-card tucked away somewhere in the small print :rolleyes:People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

I think now its just the principle of the matter. I wrote to Halifax card services to ask them to explain the descrepancy between my guaranteed acceptance and their refusal. No real explanation just the usual line about credit scoring and no mention there being terms and conditions in the non existant small print:-).
But wait the plot thickens. I am still being offfered the same card on the halifax website, altough this time it clearly mentions there are criteria. My wife has since recieved 2 e-mails from halifax saying she has this same 0% card guaranteed which already has her name on it!!!! there is no mention of any criteria. I know i'm confused.0 -
They lie and use false advertising, i have been refused guaranteed loans on several occasions. Its pretty commonplace, the banks can do what they like to us.... and we should bend over and take it without any fuss.... like the good subservient slaves that we are.0
