Deposit guarantee schemes are often administered by local authorities with landlords. Have a look at local council websites that may have info about this.

You are not missing anything obvious, other than finding a good source of info about locally run deposit schemes or tenant rent protection schemes so hopefully other posters can give you links to them.

You must understand, and I'm sure you are discovering this, that it is very rare for a landlord to accept a tenant without a deposit as it's the only modest form of protection/risk mitigation they have and most landlords won't accept tenants claiming housing benefit for a host of reasons.

Are you able to provide the landlord with a guarantor - A friend or relative who will pass a credit check and perhaps owns their own property? Who might be able to lend you a deposit.

If you are homeless, do look at the information on the Shelter website which tells you how a local council is obliged to assist you. The definition of homeless is generally that a person does not have security of tenure within the next month so it does include people having to doss with relatives, etc, it doesn't just apply to street sleepers.

Your first port of call should be the Private Sector Rentals Team at the local Council, but, even where a Council does offer a deposit guarantee you may find that you don't fit the criteria. For example, in some areas, the guarantees are not available to single people, or are run in conjunction with a local charity which imposes specific rules for eligibility, on things such as having a "local connection"

Some LLs *will* let without a deposit, partly because they want to find a way round being listed on any of the deposit scheme databases: you could try contacting the local LL association for relevant info.

Where are you currently living: are you staying with someone else or in a hostel?
