Virtually all of the finest scientific minds in the world say that global warming is man made, based on the best up-to-date empirical evidence.
Sammy says it isn't. Based on, em....??
Hmmm who should I believe?0 -
It's too early to say if climate change is caused by human activity. Those who think it is use the argument that levels of CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) have increased by 50% since the industrial revolution. As CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the argument is that increased levels will have an effect on the climate. It's a powerful argument (which is why it shouldn't be dismissed). What isn't known is whether the CO2 levels are such that climate change will definitely occur.
Those who counteract this argument say that the climate is always changing and we don't know what is causing this current change. Historically, we have sometimes had warmer weather when CO2 levels were lower and colder weather when they have been higher. They also say that we are still, technically, in an ice age which may end regardless of how much CO2 we pump into the atmosphere.
As for climate change meaning warmer weather? Don't bet on it. Our climate is influenced by complex interactions between the air, land and water (which is why it's so hard to model) so we may get colder weather if we lose the atlantic currents that give us our temperate climate.
Bottom line - err on the side of caution and reduce emissions. By the time there's enough data to definitively say that we caused global warming, the damage will have been done.Stercus accidit0 -

Rather hard to do that, since it was a hypothetical question, the clue is in the start...."Lets say a....."
...the point being that everyone would be interested in reading such an investigation.0 -
