Gas fire help please....

Options
After a bit of advice really....

Recently moved into a rented house that has a gas flame fire, we were told by the agents that the fire was "decoration only" as since they'd managed the propery it hadn't passed the safety check so it's been disabled.

The gas safety check record says that it's not up to current regulations and that the flue needs to be 500 (or 50 - can't remember off hand) mm away from the structure i.e. chimney wall.

The landlord isn't willing to have it sorted but is more than happy for us to get it done if we want to....

So basically, any idea what that would mean? Do I need a new fire? It's a victorian terrace with chimney breasts so I don't know whether it needs a flue liner? Or would it be easier to remove the fire and have the chimney swept for an open fire?

Tried speaking to the company who did the last check but they never phone back, have tried calling another couple of local companies but they say they'll "pop round when they get chance" and haven't.

Can anyone help?
