Hi everyone i am just letting as many people know as i can about my sons insurance company Endsleigh He has been insured on a vw polo paying £500 first payment and then just under £170 a month he has 1 payment left to make on July 9th He had been looking for a bit better car as he is nearly 19 and hopefully will get 12 months no claims. He was interested in a pegouet 306 1.4 so a few quotes were around £1300 as it happens a car came up for sale and he decided to buy it the 306 was a group 4 insurance where his polo was group 2. He rang his insurance told them about changing cars the following evening we could not believe the amount of money to change this car they wanted £340 now plus his final payment £170 in July we thought this was far too much and asked why their reply was because he has gone from a group 2 to group 9 which we know its a group 4 but there was nothing we could do but pay as he would lose his deposit. Insurance companies must be able to charge what they like they also said he could start again and the yearly premium would be £3000 I feel so annoyed at this company I also couldnt believe that we had to give an exact time of car change usually they give you a bit of time either way but not these. I just thought people should be made aware

Why did he not ring his own Insurers up for a quote before he bought the car, it would have avoided this0

He didnt ring his own insurers as he wasnt wanting a quote it was the amount for just changing from one car to another with just over 1 month to go on his policy. I dont think anyone would have expected to pay this amount and when you think you are insuring a group 4 how one insurance can call it a 9 is all wrong. I only posted this so it might help others avoid the same mistake0

I would suspect a data input error by the person you spoke to. Although some insurers move car groups up or down 1 place according to claims experience, to move 5 places is pretty unusual. Double check the paperwork.0

Matty some Insurers do not use the "traditional" groups one to 20 which could explain the difference in groupings.
This would have been avoided if they had rung their own Insurer for a quote before they bought the car. The new quotes they have got from other Insurers will be based on him being a year older and having more driving experience than his current company who are rating on the details declared when the cover was taken out. I assume the new car is a newer vehicle as well which increases the premium.
Like I said if they had rung their own Insurer before they had bought the car they would have know it would be more expensive to cover the new car for the final month or so.0 -
dacouch has hit the nail on the head with regard to vehicle groups.

for Peugeot 306 1360cc's and you will see that those which have been assessed under the 1-20 group rating system are group 4 and those which have been assessed under the 1-50 group rating system are group 9.
The 1-20 system has effectively been obsolete for a couple of years now and will officially be obsolete at the end of this year.0
