Like all HP/Lexmark etc they have the printhead built in to the cartridge which good in some ways (change the cart change the printhead) it does preclude getting very cheap carts.

The 3rd party ones are basically refills and although not as expensive as originals they still aren't cheap by any stretch.

First google result picked at random.

Personally if you want an all in one then I would go Epson as the carts are basically just little ink containers I get mine for about 72p per cart and have never had a problem with them in fact my RX500 I got in 2005 is still going strong and it's only ever had one set of Epson carts in it :)

    I buy mine from https://www.ukdvdr.co.uk

Epson make i would go for, cheap compatible cartridges available for most models
always when buying a printer, look at the cost of the cartridges

I recently bought a Epson SX200 for £45 from comets, but if you look around and wait for the deals you can get a Epson Stylus Office BX300F for £48.93, direct from epson, mind you that was emailed to me in May, sign up at epson for emails on offers, and then wait.
currently you can get the same Epson SX200 for £48.93 direct from epson which is a 3in1 or just a plan printer S20 for £39.13, they use the same cartridges which work out just over a £1.25 per cart

The Canon PIXMA iP4500 is fantastic - the ink cartridges last for ages, and the print quality (particularly black text) is better than any non-laser printer I've seen. The only problem is that you'll need to buy a chip resetter if you want to use non-Canon cartridges.

If that's the case then get a cheap laser printer. The Samsung ones are pretty good.

I have the samsung CLP - 310, fantastic printer for 80 notes, imagine the B&W alternative to be just as good. Will be cheaper to run too

Epson for me. Cartridges are cheap off Ebay and www.nd-ink.co.uk and can be filled easily (needs a chip resetter, about a fiver off Ebay).

If you want to go down the laser route check out whether you can get compatible toner.

At work we replaced perfectly good HP printers (compat toner; £25) with Xerox rubbish (rebadged Samsung). Breaks down regularly and needs a fuser (£200) for every 2 cartridges (£180). Can't get compats. IT procurement are a bunch of a*******s.
