I was travelling to Cyprus and I was in the Departures area of the International Airport and I went to withdraw £200 from the ATM. I assumed, quite wrongly, that no organization would be stupid enough to put Northern Ireland notes in an ATM, in Departures, on the Air-Side of Airport Security. The only people using the damn ATM would be leaving Northern Ireland.
I was so sure that the ATM would have Bank of England notes that I didn't even check by taking out £10 or £20 first. I went straight for the £200 first time.
I'll tell you. I was fit to be tired!!!
Bummer, mate!
I didn't even know that there was an ATM on t'other side! Anytime, I've used the machines before you go through security, I've always been given BoE notes and I think it actually states that 'this machine dispenses BoE notes'. Thanks for the warning though, Stephen.0 -
Isn't it the height of absurdity that in NI we accept English, Welsh and Scottish notes that equate to Sterling however our NI Sterling notes are not accepted in England, Wales or Scotland.0

I've been rejected before...with an Irish £10 note.
But now the cashpoint on the left hand side when you go up the escalator thing into Belfast International dispenses them (it says above it) because I use it when travelling home.0 -
Bumpity bump... could anyone please tell me if the information in this thread (above) is still correct? I need to get hold of some Bank of England notes this week.
Many thanks in advance.0 -

The only legal tender for the UK ( including N.Ireland) is Bank of England Sterling. All other notes are accepted by Bank concession only.0

Halifax in Bangor gives out English notes. What i do at the ATM is take £10 out first to make sure it is paying out English notes. Can't be too carefull:cool:0 -

Cheers. Notice how I bumped an 18 month old thread with a new question and until you posted it had just provoked a continuation of the discussion about the legality of NI banknotes?0
