Yeah, scan was the place I was thinking of, they ran outta stock quick!

I usually check places like Novatech, overclockers, or if you're really desperate, Pixmania.

    £97 for a 4870 at overclockers.

I do want to be able to play games on PC, just not going to be my main gaming machine so not looking to spend £100s on a graphics card. I've read some pretty decent reviews on ones that are under £50. So just wondering what is best?

The OP did already cover that ;)

    I prefer the original logic:
    Intel X3100 > Radeon 2900 > Geforce 295

for £50 are you expecting to play modern games? Are you hoping the screen will refresh more than annually?
I find it hard to believe that any RECENT reviews rate sub £50 cards for gaming...unless their idea of extreme gaming is turning animations ON in mah-jongg.
~£100 for a low/mid gaming card..the 4850 already mentioned is a great card for the money

hmmm, except the benchmark results at 1680x1050 for the 4850 ati is equal to the nvidea 9800gtx both at 320

hence the 4850 being the value for money card in his price range
