I have the addition plus account, but because i have only been a customer for 4 months no offers are available at present.

If you have only been a customer for four months then not enough history has built up for your account. You can still do a full application in branch. You should know whether you have limits or not in another 4/5 months.

So would this change were I to upgrade to a Barclays Current Account Plus? (not planning on doing this, just curious!) :)

    Hi

I cannot speak for Barclays as such, but all banks work on similar levels, but as to their workings I am not sure.

    What I know is this:

I opened a Lloyds TSB and Nationwide Current Account last month, when I went through the application on-line, I applied for the Classic Account with Lloyds TSB, and declined the overdraft request. Once the account was open I went into branch to discuss a few things, and whilst the advizor was away, I noticed on screen that I had failed to take up the overdraft offer, and credit card available too me, so I asked about air miles, and she said, she could see I had been accepted for a Credit Card, and I just signed the agreements, and also she loaded the overdraft immediately, so it seems this was all generated upon application.
Nationwide worked similar ways, I applied in-branch this time, and declined the overdraft offer, account open and a week later, I phoned up regarding my pin, the advizor said had I realized that an overdraft was available to me with immediate effect, so I took it, and she then told me to apply for their credit card, to which I did do, and was accepted for that also.
At this point, these accounts were only opened to be used as everyday spending accounts, not my main current accounts, but now have switched my salary to Nationwide. How the scoring works is puzzling, as if I am to believe the score experian showed me last week, I don't know how I am managing to obtain any forms of finance, even though my payments are all OK, so the moral is: There is nothing you can do to help with pre set limits, these are something that are generated either on account opening, or subject to scores, both internal and external, and also it proves you don't always need to utilize the bank as your main account to obtain them either.

    You can't.

If the bank publicised how it made decisions on lending openly then it would get loads of fraudulent applications.

What barclays will do is write to customers offering 'pre-approved to apply' loan or credit card amounts as part of marketing campaigns. You would still be checked though and potentially declined if your credit rating wasn't up to scratch.

If not, Barclays would be breaching a whole host of FSA rules about treating customers fairly and ensuring that any loan or card payments are affordable to the customer. Since they can only prove this by reviewing a detailed application form with your income and outgoings, they can't possibly 'pre approve' limits.

As a student, the amount you can borrow will depend on whether you have a job with income coming in, what you need the money for and how much barclays think you will earn when you graduate. Upgrading to an Additions plus account won't make any difference.

    Good luck
