Best way to convert DVD files to Avi

I have a DVD box set that I want to convert to Avi. The problem I have is that the DVD's will not play in my DVD player or on WMPfrom the disk, but I can pull the files off the disk and watch the dvd that way.
I have on of those ICY multimedia boxes that I want to put the box set on so I can watch it from there then I don't have to buy the box set again.
What is the best (free if possible) program to use to do this?

Unfortunately for Windows users, it can't decrypt DVD-Video by itself. A third-party utility such as DVD Decrypter is required for that. It's free and cross-platform.
Wait... they've removed decoding capability from the other versions too?0 -

The OP said they can "pull the files off the disk", do I assumed they had some way of copying the DVD onto the computer.Wait... they've removed decoding capability from the other versions too?
The Mac version will still copy DVDs if you have VLC installed. I use MacTheRipper for that purpose anyway.0 -

It seems that Handbrake needs access to libdvdcss library to read encrypted DVDs.
VLC comes with the library built in, so the Mac version of Handbrake is designed to automatically use VLC's libdvdcss.
But I think that the Windows version of Handbrake isn't designed this way so you need to use DVD-Decrypter.
I'm using Linux. I have libdvdcss library installed. So I think that Linux Handbrake will use that library (whether or not VLC is installed).
In the link here, it mentions libdvdcss for Mac and Linux, but it doesn't mention Windows.

I know. Ridiculous isn't it? :rolleyes:0

The Mac and Linux versions are both older than the Windows one, so I can only assume the development of the Windows application is a bit behind.0
