Steel Installation - Structual Advice

Options
Hi,

I am having an extension build at the moment and my builder has recommended removing a supporting 'island' (piece of external wall ~ 1.2m wide). To do this we would need to install a 6m piece of steel accross the kitchen in order to remove this island.

He is quoting £3K to install the steel needed, weld to current steel at right angles to new steel, prop up where needed and build a 600mm wall at the end of the kitchen to support the new steel. remove current concrete lintels in place (2 peices to the island from either side)

Q - is this about right and should I consult a Structual Engineer
Q - I live in West Yorks - any recommendations of one

You will definately need building regs for this so you need either a structural engineer, or I believe I had heard that the manufacturors of the RSJ will do the calculations for you. I would contact the building inspector and ask their advice.

Price sounds fairly reasonable for the amount of work involved
