I bought a a set of "special value" Windsor and Newton paint brushes (for acrylics) which I use as makeup brushes. They're much better than cheapo sets of makeup brushes which I think are a false economy. Decent brushes give a much better finish than sponge applicators and they last longer and are easier to clean (and so I think more hygenic). You definitely shouldn't use sponges to apply foundation since they don't give a very good finish, soak up loads of foundation leading to wastage, and are breading grounds for bacteria. Use your fingers or a foundation brush, the cheapest foundation brush I've found was in Superdrug but I can't remember the price. Baby shampoo is great for washing makeup brushes.

i use the one from superdug too-its a QVC brand and it is reallly good-just as good or even better than the really expensive ones. It was a bargian too at just around £3.

    Hi all, mine would be:

Make your own moisturiser, especially if you have dry
skin. I have not bought moisturiser for 6 months now, as the making is so easy - 5-10 mins at the most and it makes around 2 pots. One I keep in the fridge and one in the bedroom. See my username for my blog, have lots of homemade stuff on there.

Make your own shower gel - as above, it's fun and you can choose the smells with essential ols etc.

My fave is to make your own face oil - I have mentioned this in my blog too, costs soooOOoooooOOOoo little compared to expensive big name face oils and so easy to make. Lovely gift as well = further money saving.

Soap is my also latest thing to make too - super easy and multiple uses for shower, hand washing, delicates etc. posted on my blog today about this. £10p bar of goats milk, oatmeal and honey anyone:beer:? So as a glam thing at home it looks sweet, plus lovely gift for friends or family. You can experiment with lots of colours, scents and textures...

Charity shops - Several of my last items of clothes have come from a charity shop. I choose items that seem more durable and well made. Ends up same price as say Primark, but lasts as long as a much better brand. I also see lovely purses and occasional handbags by keeping an eye on charity shops.

Being glamorous can also be about going out for less money - so keep an eye out for vouchers and Martin's e-mail, so you can print and go out! Also go for cocktails in Happy Hour times with a few friends for extra cheer!

    Baby/mineral Oil

I use it to shave my legs with. I find oil can clog the razor a bit so I have an old toothbrush to get the gunk out, but it seems to make the blades last a huge amount of time.

Mixed with salt it is a body scrub

Can also use the oil as a body moisturiser alone

    Cheap massage oil :blushing:

(and for chicken keepers it can help oil a chicken's vent if it has an egg that's stuck. Sorry to gross everyone out there. Oh and I've put it on a squeaky door hinge before. The oil that is not the chicken)

Eat well and take good care of your skin. You will look great if you take care of yourself.

Keep on top of basic 'grooming'; well styled eyebrows open up your face and a great haircut makes you look (and feel) amazing - it should also do the work for you, so you need to spend minimal product and time on it.

I keep a lipbalm beside my bed, in my bag, in the kitchen... I love lipbalm :p It makes your lips soft and 'plump', rather than dehydrated looking.

    Drink lots of water!

Someone mentioned on here about using paintbrushes for makeup. I may be wrong but I tried this years ago and when I was telling the man in the art shop what I wanted to use them for, he told me not to as they can contain something. I can't remember what it was but it ended with an '____ax'. Absolutely no idea but since then I didn't bother. I could be wrong though.

I did look this up and it appears that it may have been anthrax. You would have to google it concerning to brushes and it does appear that the spores can live in hides etc. I am sure that it's not a worry but I immediately thought of that conversation and decided to post it.

Since this thread was started, we have a Health and Beauty Board ;) I'll move this thread over there, to keep all H&B threads together :D

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
