Getting utilities re-connected / switched back on, repossesed house.

Wooden

I've just purchased a repossesed house (first time buyer), and get the keys this coming friday.
All the utilities water / gas / electric have been dissconnected / switched off, how do i go about getting them reconnected again ?
I take it the supply just gets switched off rather than everything physically getting dissconected ?
Can any supplier reconnect them or does it have to be a specific one ?
Also, is there a charge for getting them re-conected ?

Cheers

Most properties are not physically disconnected; they just have the supplies switched off at the isolation valve/switch.

If the meters (or main fuse in the case of electricity) is still there, then the supplies have probably just been isolated.

You can turn them on yourself if you want.
Be careful. The pipework/circuits may not be safe. That's a judgement you need to make. If in doubt you can call a plumber, electrician, gas engineer to turn the respective supplies on for you

You'll have deemed contracts with the existing suppliers from the moment you use their supply.

In the case of water, the supplier should be obvious (or ask a neighbour if in doubt)

Contact the existing suppliers with current meter readings so that they can set up a new account (and so you wont be troubled by any debts the previous occupants incurred)

If you don't know the current gas or electricity suppliers, post again and someone will explain how to identify them.

Once you have accounts set up, you can switch gas & electricity to any supplier you like, but that will take typically 4-6 weeks from application.

Think i'll get someone to switch it all back on, so best thing to do is note the meter readings before i use anything, then contact the suppliers and get an account set up.
Why will the water supplier be obvious ? Also how do you go about identifying the Gas / Electric suppliers ?

The water supplier is regional. You just need to know which area you are in ie: Severn Trent, Thames Water etc.
