Eon called...sounds dodgy

My partner had a phone call on Friday, which left a voice mail message, the caller claimed to be from Eon and he wanted us to call him to arrange a meter reading - to call his a mobile number - 0787282*015. Although we live in a apartment complex and all the meters are at the entrance.

Now we supply meter reads online about once a month, and the meter reader was around about a month ago.

I am not asking if this is standard practise - as i work for a energy company - but it is more of a is this more of a scam call or has anybody else had this type of call....

  • If Eon is your existing supplier it might be genuine, but does sound a little strange. Iif they aren't your supplier call Eon and report him.

Yes, i did forget to mention that we are with Eon - but if Eon has called us in this manner - we may not be with them for much longer.

There is also the possibilty that the caller may have had access to ecoes.co.uk and simply used our address to find out who our supplier is and take it from there.

If in doubt, do as jd87 suggests and give them your meter reading at that time.

I'm not sure what risk there is providing someone else your meter reeading anyway, but if you want to be sure it's only Eon that have it, call them on their usual number.

If you really then want to find out if it's a scam, call the mobile number and tell them that your meter reading has just been put on your account and see what they say. (but don't give them any information other than what they have already provided you with)

    Hi sweetstudent,

I’ve never heard of this happening before so I’m keen to understand more and establish what’s happened.

Would you say the caller sounded like a meter reader or someone from the call centre?

I believe some E.ON Energy Service meter readers do carry company mobile phones. Again I haven’t heard of them using them for this purpose.

If the appointment was pre arranged, meter readers may have your phone number and call when on route to the job; again this doesn’t seem to be the case.

The reason I say this is because I don’t think regular door to door meter readers would have a contact number for each customer. Its worth remembering that that a regular meter reader will be reading all the meters in a certain area irrespective of who each persons supplier is.

There has to be more to this, as it stands it certainly doesn’t sound like a correct process.
