Cat Insurance - Worth It?

Options
My mother has recently divorced and has taken on the two cats, and with a limited income now she is struggling to pay for insurance and food. £25.00 for insurance for both cats; and £20 for food for the month, equaling £45 for the month in total. She has had the cats all their lives and they are now 9 years old and so she is reluctant to give them away however £45 is a considerable amount to spend considering after she has paid all her bills she is only left with £30 for the month to spend on her self. i.e. socialising etc.

If she were to cancel the insurance it would give her a little bit more money for her to get out and meet new people, but is this wise to cancel the insurance?

She really loves the cats and doesn't want to get rid of them really.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Richard.

Pet Insurance tends to increase in cost at around the age of 8 as after this age is when pets tend to develop most of their problems.

If she cancelled the Insurance and there was a big problem eg hit by a car or cancer which can both costs thousands. Could she afford to pay the vet bills?

The inflation on Pet Insurance and Vet bills is normally in double figures, this is because new treatments continually drip through from Human Medical Treatment eg high tech scans etc etc. As well as being expensive treatments these also mean they can treat conditions they could not before.

Some people advocate putting as similar amount of money aside each month as they would pay in pet Insurance and paying bills out of this (You may need a few thousand in the bank to start with). This for some people can save money and for others whose pets are unfortunate to need treatment for one or often more conditions can end up costing them money.
