Refused jobseekers lack of class 1

I have been working casually in a creche since march doing around 10 hours per week. Only recently have I found out I could be claiming jobseekers. So visited the office and put through a claim.
Got letter saying can't be given jobseekers due to lack of Class 1 National Insurance 2007-2008. I'm sure I was paying Nat Ins then as was self employed as a childminder, but wondering now if it was class 2. Also I only earned about £5000. Could that be affecting my claim?
Will ring them tomorrow but feeling descriminated against because I either didn't earn enough or didn't pay the right class of Nat Ins.
Frustrated.

The money you earn from the 10 hours you work would be knocked off any JSA payment.0

Class 1 NI is deducted at source by your employer if you are on PAYE.
Self-employed people pay Class 2 NI themselves.
I am not sure about the other points, but there are many people here who will know more.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Class 2 (self employed) doesn't qualify you for JSA(Contributory) unfortunately. Class 1 (employed) does.
You might be entitled to JSA(Income Based) but that's means tested. What are your family circumstances/partner/children etc ?0 -

Exactly! There are many advantages to being self-employed, but there are some problems too. (This does not apply to people who have a PAYE job and do a bit of self-employed work here and there).
For example, people who pay Class 2 NI only will lose their second state pension entitlement as it is understood that they will make their own provision.
It is really important to understand these things, and to keep up with the ever changing rules. It is not so much a question of discrimination, but of applying the rules about what Class 1 and Class 2 NI contributions entitle someone to.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
