Debt owing from a property I left 2 years ago.

I've received a letter from a company asking for a whopping £180 from a property I lived in for 6 months and left in Oct 07. It must be from this place as the letter arrived at my sisters house, which is the only forwarding address I gave and I changed all addresses when I moved into my new place.
I'm 100% certain I paid all my bills before I moved out and there is certainly no way I could have run up £180 between the bills I did have.
Letter also states they have previously tried to contact me but I haven't had anything before hand.
Anyone know where I stand on this? Can I ring up and deny knowledge of it?

The problem with these bills is that people are so busy when they move, things get overlooked and then, in time, they don't have the relevant paperwork.
The most likely reason for the bill is that when you submitted a meter reading on moving out, it wasn't used for the bill and you paid for less than you had used. The new householder submits a moving in reader and eventually it's picked up that you weren't billed for the missing units.
Could this be the case?0 -
Not sure. This doesn't appear anywhere on my credit file either so I'm wondering would anything happen if I refuse to pay. I can't afford it.0

I think it's a large enough amount for the supplier to pursue you for the debt. If they do, it will appear on your credit file. I would have thought that if you ignore them, they'll sell it on to a debt collection agency fairly quickly.0

It's already gone to debt collecting agency. ScotCall Debt Collecting.0

In that case, I would suggest looking for evidence to counter the claim if you are disputing it. Perhaps other people will post suggesting it won't go to court, but I would be wary of hoping it won't, in case you end up owing hundreds with court costs added.0
