Rail fine
Options
hi just wondering if anyone has any advice or suggestions. i paid for my mum to travel from aldershot to warrington yesterday. she got to london earlier than expected and jumped on the first train to warrington which was at 6.30. she has been fined £115 because her tickets were booked on line and should have been for the 7.30 train. she has took the fine and has to pay within 10 days.
the reason we are question this is, when i booked the tickets i got confirmation but when the tickets were sent to my mums in aldershot she had no train times or information. had some one on the train seen her to aldershot then she would have known not to use the train. in feb this year when she came up she arrived at euston again an hour earlier and the barriers would not let her through so when she asked an assistant they said as long as she does not travel in peak time upto 6.30 then it would be fine to use the ticket. so very conflicting information.
we just think that the fine she has been given is very expensive. a return ticket is normally £65 on the day so to be given a fifty pound fine on top i think is outrageous. i mean we had paid to get to warrington its not like she didnt have a a ticket at all.
do you think she would have grounds to stand on for appeal. has anyone been in a similar situation? is £50 fine and another ticket acceptable fine?

She hasn't been fined at all - just sold a normal standard open single ticket for the peak hour train she travelled on.
Presumably she had either an advance ticket for another train or an off peak ticket?0 -

According to National Rails 'cheapest fare finder' an anytime single between Aldershot and Warrington - which is presumably is what she needed to travel at the time she did - costs £131.50.
So as dzug1 says, there's no fine, she just been asked to buy a valid ticket for the train she's travelling on.0
