First Car Advice?
Passed my test last week but i'm stuck for what car to get and insure.
I'm only 17 so everything seems so expensive.
I was looking at insurance prices on 1.2 clios and corsas and I think the lowest I got was £3000 a year, and that's paying it all at once.
Anyone got any tips or advice on how to save money when choosing a car for a young driver?

Try putting your parents on the insurance as named drivers this usually fetches the price down.
admiral and bell are pretty good for drivers with no NCB0 -
Your insurance is going to be expensive no matter what car you buy, just shop around and make sure you get the best deal possible. Adding a parent as a named driver is good advice.0

Take a look at this website http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/ for insurance groups...
The cheap ones are as expected - KA's and the like...
My brother is 17 and in the same position as you, he's just bought a 1.25 fiesta and the insurance is around £1600 tpf&f...
As mentioned above try and add your parents or an older sister - it brought mine from £2800 to £2200 before!
Make sure you use all of the comparission website for your insurance...0 -
hi
im in the exact same position as you and at the moment the cheapest websites ive found are egg and churchill as it works out at about £2000 fully comp on a corsa 1.2 with 2 additional driversDont forget to thank me if it helps0 -
Try thinking out of the box, instead of just buying a typical first car.
My first car was an Opel Manta GTE 2.0l which was great fun, and due to its scarcity cheap to insure. Be aware that typical first time drivers cars are the ones that are crashed most often, and therefore are attracting higher premiums. Sometimes you can get a slightly less intersting, but more drivable car that is actually cheaper to insure as it has a better history, thus less crashes and cheaper repairs.
The only true way to tell is to get some quotes on a number of cars and try and work out which is better for you
Good luck

Its not going to be cheap... owning your own car isn't cheap full stop but its worth it!! As others have said get your mum on there as an ADDITIONAL driver it really will bring the price down.
And don't worry it won't stay so high until your 25 as some reports lead you to believe... My first year cost around £1300 and then 2 years later it was about £600 and that was on a brand new 1.4 sporting car:j :j0 -
Might be of no use to you at all but.............tonight's Top Gear I believe is doing an item on suitable cars for 17 year olds?
Might be good, but there again, knowing Clarkson - it might not!
I'll be watching anyway - and it's repeated during the week too.:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j
:heart2: RIP Clio 1.9.93 - 7.4.10 :heart2:I WILL be tidy, I WILL be tidy!

Admiral are excellent for drivers under 25. Half the price of everyone else for me!
Don't look into spending more than 2k on the car, it's not worth it as your first car. My first car was an R reg Clio 1.2. Think the insurance was only about £1100 TPF&F. Putting your parents on there really helps.0
