Don't you get less funding in your final year though, because you are assumed to finish sooner?

Actually, you might be right on that one.

That time of year again? I graudated last year and finally got a minimum wage job in February.

Most of my uni mates don't have jobs yet - so this year's grauates are competing with last years graduates too.

For the OP - Are you still at your uni house? Or at home? Cause enjoy the final month of being a student (technically anyway). Don't give up on the job front though.

Are you constrained by location or can you relocate? When I originally graduated (before doing Teacher training) I had to move over 300 miles to do a job in my field. I'd negotiated the start date to be the monday after my graduation so did temping work in a call centre in the mean time. I got lucky and had inbound only, but these are the sorts of jobs people rarely want to do even on a temp basis - so you may get one of these types of temp jobs even in the current climate.

My son is in a similar position to the OP, being in his final year. He has completed all his work and is just waiting to hear his results. He hopes to go back in 2010 to do a Masters, but needs a job for at least a year in between. I have told him to look into the JSA question as £50 a week is better than nothing.

He is still in his uni town as his rent is paid until early July and the graduation ball isn't until then. He will be coming home the day before his 21st birthday.

I went to a union meeting recently and was told that, on average, for every job vacancy on Merseyside, there are 58 applicants!

  • I've just finished and although grad ceremony is not until 8th July my course has technically finished. On the job centre database (in the job centre only, the people you ring do not have the same information...) they can find out the actual date your course finished (mine was 12th June).
The day AFTER the job centre has your course down as finished you can apply for JSA (HB and CTB), however expect a delay on getting any money.

I don't actually know the answer to the OPs question, having never been in the position to have to apply but in terms of getting a job..

I started off at the bottom and took a job through an agency on a short term contract in the financial services sector. It was mind numbing but I stuck it out for the money. They kept on extending the contract and I was then taken on permanently in a different role and then promoted several times. Within 15 months I was promoted to a managerial role which was quicker than if I had done a graduate scheme.

(P.S. in my area they are still taking people on through agencies in the financial sector. They are also taking on extra advisers in the Job Centre!)

You do (as you will know) get less money from your student loan in your final year. However, I'm pretty sure that's because the extra in the other years is there to tide you over until September/October until you go back (not that it would).
