Uni finished, no job atm, can i get JSA(Dole)

As the title really, having trouble finding this out for sure....

my uni card says i am no longer a student as of the time when the exam period finished.
jobs are hard to come by atm as im sure many of you know, they all want experience etc, and a degree alone isnt enough to get a job when there are so many people out of work used to doin that partic job etc....
i cant even get a graduate job as im not a graduate yet.... yea im applyin but many dont take on just yet...

however from the internet it appears i cant get any help eg job seekers/dole/whatever fancy name it has until X amount of weeks after i graduate officially (15 july)

so it appears im in limbo. no longer a student as far as the benefits of being one go, but not a graduate so i cant get them benefits yet....

so does any one know when i can claim, what goes on etc etc. things are hard and another month is surely impossible. im still actively lookin for a job and have been for a while, and i dont intend to stay on beenfits.... why would i do 3 years at uni and 2 years at college...

anyone help?

Many Thankss

My son is in the same position however he has persuaded the DHSS to at least give him an appointment to see an advisor to see if he can at least get help with a job.Like you he has not found any graduate programmes, and you don't actually need to have graduated to apply BTW, but no one seems ot be even adding names to waiting lists anymore and he has been trying since just before Christmas.

None of the local usual places will take him as they know that he isn't going to stick with somewhere like McDonalds once a career job comes up, he couldn't even get shortlisted for any of the 200+ jobs he has applied for so far. He has sent out in excess of 200 applications and causal enquiries, has had one 'no sorry' and the rest were never responded to. He also can't get on the books of any emplyment agency, he did get an appointment with Manpower but they basically told him they wouldn't waste his time taking him on their books as they had no work.

Fingers crossed though as he has an interview Monday, I prefer not to say where at the moment, but he at least feels like somewhere has actually read his CV and values him enough to see him.

I am a graduate, and I think people do discrminate against grads for entry level work. I do get replies though, I will get a reply roughly 1/20 if its through email, an interview about 1/60.

    Generally speaking, eys no replies!

I am going for catering work and retail and its super tough.

There is a new Primark opening in my city, its a big one recruiting over 400 staff! The paper earlier i nthe week said over 14000 applied for their vacancies

You can'r receive JSA until the official end of term as you'll have received student funding to cover you for this period.

When you have officially finished, if you still need to, you can claim means tested JSA of £50 per week and help with rent/council tax if necessary. As these benefits are means tested they will depend on whether you live with someone and whether you have savings.

Can't you find anything at all? Have you tried supermarkets - shelf stacking, order picking, etc?
If you will the end, you must will the means.

If it is like my son they won't even give him an application form, graduate = no long term prospects so not worth spending even a fiver sorting out a uniform and some training.

Unfortunately due to the economic climate jobs like these are in demand. Anyone will do them.

So they are likely not giving him the application form as they have already had 200 applicants for that one position. Plus most supermarkets ask you to apply online for jobs.

They know with graduates especially those that have missed the graduate recruitment schemes for this year that lots of them will stay in such a job for a year.

I graduated years ago when the job market had perked up and employers in supermarkets, other retail, catering and call centres had no problems taking on graduates.

If your son can stand doing care work then may be he should see if any of that is available.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Don't you get less funding in your final year though, because you are assumed to finish sooner?

Try talking to the HR department at your University as they often have a peripatetic pool (temps), they will often employ students on a temporary basis. Also ask at The Guild of Students (Students Union) and see if they have anything, during the summer months they tend to take on students to show foreign students around as they come over earlier because they often need to learn to speak and understand English before their courses start in September/October.

this is the problem, according to my uni card etc term has ended...
my loan only went up to the same point each year, nothing to cover the summer period, which i am now officially in as far as uni are concerned.....
