Wireless router signal

Hi,

I've just bought a laptop but have been told by my local computer store that the signal from a wireless router will only go through 2walls. Where the router would be positioned and where we are likely to use the laptop most is 4 walls. How can I solve this problem are some routers more powerful than others?

I'm told an "N" rated router is better than a "G" is this true and if so would it sort the potential problem I have. I don't want to go out and buy one until I know I'm getting the right one.

Any recommendations?

Also I want one that I can set up easily as I'm not the most technically gifted of people.

Thanks,

Pete.
I'll get me coat!

Anything by Linksys or D-Link will be fine.

Have you tried the laptop with the current router? No point going for wireless N technology if your current router will push the signal, esp if your using a wireless G card.

It would be better if you move the router into the middle of the house where it will only be passing 2 walls at max.

    Hi Jaffa,

I don't have any sort of router at the minute. This is my first laptop.

The broadband cable from virgin comes in at the left hand corner of the house and we would mostly be using the laptop in the bottom right hand room if you like so the signal would have to travel diagonally through the house. That's the best I can describe it anyway, if it makes sense.

I'd be inclined to pull up my carpets, run a cable around the carpet grips into the middle of the house and place my router there instead.

We have a netgear wireless N modem router. It's located on the third floor of our 4 floor house and we use it regularly in our kithcen on the ground floor. The signal travels through numerouse walls. In the kitchen the signal is only 2/5 as opposed to 5/5 when used on the third floor.
The house is modern and the walls are only plasterboard rather than solid.

You might lose a bar or two but you should still get a strong connection. You should be fine :)

If your antenna on the router unscrews then slap one of these on, did the trick for me

Apparently i'm new so can't post links directly: (just copy and paste) replace **** with http and !!!!.!!.!! with ebay.co.uk

    ****://cgi.!!!!.!!.!!/WiFi-Wireless-9dbi-Booster-Router-Antenna-Aerial-SMA_W0QQitemZ300301874496QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Networking_SM?hash=item45eb62f540&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1683|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

also a piece of card covered in foil attached behind it will also increase the signal into a certain direction (the bigger the better)

Or you could try a more powerful wifi setup

I use one of these: ****://www.!!!!/images/pheenet_wlu-803g.gif

    ****=http !!!!=wcd24.com

Not sure how much it was now but they're certainly not expensive

Note the gold bit where you screw the antenna in, just unscrew the original and use the 9db one with a bit of foil and your laughing :D

although im not really laughing about not being able to post links, it's not exactly helpful to anyone

by the way i recieve my wifi signal from a farm around half a mile away, before i did this my signal strength was 1 Mbps Very Low/Low, as I type now my signal strength is 11Mbps Good
