Right ok, we bought a new panasonic plasma about 16 months ago it had a warranty for 12 months. Last night lines started appearing on the screen and after turning it off and on to see if that helped (:rolleyes: it didn't but worth a try) I googled the problem only to find that this is a common fault with this model we have and it needs a new screen :eek: I couldn't believe it..........it's going to cost a ridicolus amount to be fixed. Its out of warranty and the shop we had it from has gone bust ( empire direct) so its not looking good.
I know I probably sound really cheeky but I wondered if there is any point asking panasonic to help with the repair costs as the fault is with the tv itself. It cost over £1000 surely it should last more than 16 months if I knew about the problems with this model of tv we would have chosen I different one.
Is there any consumer rights to protect us from situations like this?

I wouldn't ask panasonic to "help" with the repair costs, I'd tell them to fix it and see what they say.I love surprises!0

Dont take this at 100% but I *think* they started teh 5yr guarantee thing after the px80 range.
Worth calling em and giving serial number see what they say, if its not covered by a 5 yr warranty SoGa comes into play.0 -
You're not being cheeky at all - you will be exercising your statutory rights under SOGA.
As previously mentioned, confirm the guarantee / warranty position. If it turns out you're still in warranty, let the joy be unconfined.
If not, contact the retailer requesting them to arrange for replacement (unlikely) or repair at their cost quoting SOGA and that goods supplied are expected to fulfill their function for a reasonable period of time - 16mths is certainly not reasonable.
You'll probably get some back chat citing that you are out of guarantee, but persist. As is appears to be a common fault, you may not even have to go to the efforts to prove an inherent fault. You can threaten to take them to court, they will almost certainly concede at that point.
If you paid on credit card or finance, you could pursue a section 75 claim (consumer credit act) against the retailer.
Your contract is with the retailer, Panasonic are not obliged to helip you at all though they may offer goodwill - e.g. free repair.
Sounds like a straightforward case to me and not cheeky in the slightest0 -

Sorry to jump in to this thread but i had a Kia car ran out of the 3yr warranty and the boot door struts went and it wouldn't stay up. I rang Kia and told them and suggested the struts should have lasted longer than just over 3 years and they did it for free GOOD OLD KIA customer service recomended. The moral of this story if you dont ask you dont get.The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0 -

ok i've rang panasonic but their computers are down at the moment so they are calling me back later. They want a copy of the proof of purchase...I cannot find it anywhere (we had a fire not so long ago and a lot of paperwork was damaged along with half the bloody kitchen). Anyway I paid on debit card for the tv so if I get the bank statement do you think that we be enough? we also registered the tv and regulary get letters from panasonic about extending the warranty on the tv so surley they can see how old the tv is wont they?

The statement should be enough, don't forget Panasonic are under no obligation to deal with you as you did not purchase from them, so tread carefully.
In future for goods over £100. use a credit card, as you can then go after the CC company under Section 75.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
