Indemnity insurance (not business)

Can anyone offer any advice please

I have been given the oportunity to join a naval ship to travel form Lisbon back to Plymouth the idea of this is for naval personel to have thier families on board to get a feel for what navy life is like.

however because I am not an immediate family member ( I am brother inlaw to person inviting me) the navy / MOD request that I must have suitable insurance which should indemnify the MOD for claims arising out of the visit up to £2m.

I am very frustrated because I cannot find a company so far who will offer such insurance any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is most frustrating as I think on this trip I would be safer than being on a cross channel ferry!!
The navy having such high standards in fire fighting and damage control

You need to look for LIABILIY insurance. Indemnity is a fundamental principle of insurance whereby the insurer will indemnify you for any loss covered under the terms of the policy. This means they will return you to the same financial state you were in before the loss.

Standard home contents insurance provides a typical £2million (sometimes £5m) personal liability cover. Consult your home insurnace policy wording for the exclusions and terms of cover to see if you would be covered. You might also like to phone them and ask. Take a not of who you spoke to and when if you do call.

The main issue with the home insurance will be the geographical limits - I am guessing that the trip will be excluded though I thought maybe it would be covered given it is a Naval vessle etc...

The best bet is probably travel insurance, which also provides personal liability insurance cover, again a typical £2m but might go higher depending on the cover. This is probably the policy you will need... but please go and find a broker who can talk you through the various options and policies, or spend a lot of time reading through wordings and conditions if buying online.
