Windows 2000 on Laptop. Help URGENTLY needed.

Options
Hi all.

I was wondering if any tech people could help me out on this one, beacause i just cant figure it out or dont understand it at all! I work with computers all the time. I will try to explain this as well as i can.

I basically was given an IBM 570e laptop. Yes old, but needed for on Windows 2000.

As some may or may not know, this IBM has no drives (floppy/cd)

So i followed the usual method of doing so...
Removed the HDD, Placed in laptop with drives, Formatted & Partition FAT32.
Format with /s to copy system files.

I copied another few files to the IBM HDD, how formatted FAT 32 and blank copied Smartdrv.exe and config.sys and himem.sys

I then using a USB to IDE adaptor plugged the HDD in and copied the i386 folder from the 2000 CD ROM to my IBM harddisk.

Removed the hdd. Placed into laptop. Got to dos prompt typed in smartdrv.exe then went to C:\i386 and then launched the file WINNT.exe

It says setup is to begin install state location of files C:\WINNT.

Next and it copies all the files and then reboots. When it reboots on a FAT 32 12GB Partition it comes up with NTLDR is missing, when on FAT partition of 2GB it just sits with a blinking cursor.

I dont really know what to do from here. Think I've tried everything.

BIOS update, tried from the original to latest that claims it supports XP.

Also. I can install 98SE on laptop. even though I dont want 98, but when I did and then tried to install 2000 upgrade it had same problems.
Thing is. Put this HDD into the other laptop and it will start the install process of 2000.
Put it in IBM its dead.

I think I can only install using IBM Floppy/Docking CDROM?

Please help if you can.

Is there a NTLDR on the 2000 CD?

ntldr is present on my XP system in c root.
  • I think so, and if i place the hdd into another system i.e. other laptop then it works perfectly OK! comes to the bootup menu and everything for 2000

heye, i got a 570E too. luckily i got a dock station with cdrom drive and floppy, and got the original ibm thinkpad windows 2000 restore cd. ok, so that not going to help you, so try the following...

do the bootable windows 98 floppy and copy the usual files to the floppy like smartdrv, cd driver, mscdex and himem. create the autoexec and config file. on the donor lappy with the 570E hdd, boot up with the floppy and format it with format/s. edit the config and autoexec file to point to c:\ and copy them into the hdd.

boot up donor laptop and copy windows i386 from cd to hdd. remove 570E hdd from donor laptop and insert to 570E. boot up and goto i386 and try to install windows 2000.

If you can put the HDD into another laptop wirh a CD drive, why not just install Win2000 on the drive while it's in there and then sort out any driver issues later?

Tried exactly that, just loads up with a blinking cursor, can leave it on overnight!! same.

Funny I know people and have seen other 570e's running 2000/XP faultlessly!

People do you think I will require genuine floppy/cdrom to do the install....

    helpp please!!
    still stuck!:o
