Free advertising - good for small businesses?

I searched and couldn't find anything about this, so sorry if it's already on here

I joined Project Wonderful this morning (can't post links, but it's just projectwonderful . com)

You can bid on advertising spaces, and some people have no minimum bids on their spaces. i've managed to have banner advertisements for nothing for about a week now and it's generated new visits to my website.

If you go and join, you can also offer advertising space on your own website, and maybe earn some money if people bid higher than nothing. If no one bids, you can even use your own images instead of the default image so it doesn't look too bad!
It will be mine in 2009: 1. MacBook, 2. Spa session, 3. Money/vouchers

Freebies this week - computer software, nivea for me AND him, and about a million sims ;)

Great advice. Don't want to waste my time telling them no!

BAD for your search rating. Im a SEO expert and this will harm you rather than benefit your business.
    Kind Regards

Hi Bill-can I ask why it will harm the search rating? I know nothing about SEO,i've just got my new website and am looking for ways of advertising so was thinking about the directories.

Free listings dont harm your SEO rating? Only if you black hat or use link swaps and bought link builders - which is not what i am suggesting. Plus whilst the bulk of searches are done using Google, people do still use business directories so it is a good idea to cover all bases.
