Self Assessment

Options
Hi My husband has just gone back to being self emplyed so this year he is half employed and half self employed. He is a builder with a certificate so gets so much of his pay deducted for tax.

Is it worth the cost of an accountant approx £250, or should we try self assessment. we have always used an accountant and our accountant has written to us offering their servises again.

The only thing that worries me about self assessment is that it is not a complete year and would I get things right. thanks in advance Annie

You should have a go yourself. Once you have all the certificates, and the details of pay and tax from when he left his job, it should be quite straightforward.

If you try and do it as soon as posible, then it leaves plenty of time to find an accountant if you then decide that you can't do it.

Remember that you can get free help filling in a tax return by going to an HMRC enquiry centre with the form and al the details of expenses etc.

I would pay an accountant. A good one will save more than his fees :)

I have read the form twice now and gave it to the accountant each time.

if you have all the figures you can work it out but paying someone else to do it means I dont have thw worry of making a mistake it could end up costing me alot of money.

as for the employed section it will go on as an income but he will have already paide tax and NI on that bit so he shouldnt be taxed on it again.
it is all taken care of on the form
