When I am tapping the above my puter is refusing to go to the boot up screen, it just freezes. Ideas please?

Thought that was the one to get into safe mode.0 -
If you are using XP then yes F8 will get you into the boot menu. Some older PC's have problems with USB keyboards as the load in a particular order.
Agree with Strider, why safe mode? System Restore? VGA Issue?0 -

Try F12. Not all BIOSes recognise F8 at power-on time...
System Restore won't change that!0
