Hi all
Have got a dell 9200 pc and receive BT broadband via their black hub - how can i make this pc a wireless one? Do i need a usb Dongle thingy and then a router? and can anyone recommend the best way to go about this, including security issues from snoopy neighbours!!
Would like to shift the pc into a bedroom - hence wireless would remove the need to trail wires etc up the stairs - but would i still need to connect the pc via the phone line at all with wireless?
Anyone helping a seriously non techie in simple laymans terms would be really appreciated.
Thanks to all who reply......

If you have a BT "Home Hub" This is wireless, you will need a USB Wireless adapter for the computer such as this.
The computer will not need to be connected to a phone line, just in sufficient range of the Home Hub.
And as for security issues, the Hub has wireless security built in which requires you to enter a password into the computer to access the wireless.
I'm not sure if this is enabled by default, I will do a search and see if I can find any information for you.0 -
Getting confused already - sorry folks.....i have a BT home hub (black one) and plug this into phone line and pc into this.....Nothing else!!! Only mentioned a router as ASSUMED i needed one as id heard about them!!! Lack of knowledge is a beautiful thing........
IF BT homehub is wireless already, then i wont need a router? just a Netgear thingy as above, leave hub leads in phone socket and then can take PC upstairs and leave the Hub downstairs?...Is this a correct assumption by me or more rubbish brain meltdown?
Cheeers for the replies folks!!

Yes, no need to do anything else, you just need the USB adapter.
The BT Home Hub is a Router

Make sure the BT home Hub has power and connected to the ADSL line with a microfilter and then hide it behind your TV unit etc... it's a powerful little box that will serve your whole house

Assuming you've got the BT Home Hub 2.0 - the one with the curved front - you'll find the default wireless security settings on a small plastic card inside the box it arrived in.
Earlier versions of the Hub were either left unsecured by default or relied on WEP, which is about as much use as a wet paper bag. Ergo, the older models need to be configured manually.0 -
