Please can anyone tell what is involved with setting up a second pc. My mother in law has one pc set up to the internet with a router in the living room and now wants another pc set up to the net in an upstairs bedroom. Does anyone know the simplest way to do this? Many thanks for any help you can give.

Well the easiest way to do this is to use wireless.

This would either involve buying a small USB Wifi stick for the computer, or if your lucky the second computer will have Wifi built in.

This is relativity easy to set-up, just installing the drivers and entering a password.

Though this is assuming the router is wireless and has sufficent range to reach the second pc.

If the router isn't wireless you can still do it by having a wireless card in each machine and connecting in ad-hoc mode. Of course the second machine will lose the internet connection if the first computer is switched off.

So the second PC (upstairs) needs to be wireless enabled to connect to the router.

A USB wireless adapter can be bought for about £15-£20, Here's an Amazon link,
    (Linky)

Your best bet is to buy a USB Adapter that is the same brand as the router, unless anyone can suggest a product ?

What does this actually involve if we purchased this, do we just insert it into one of the usb ports? Thank you

Yes, you insert it into the USB port and install the software that is provided.

True, but usually it is the other way round. Install the software first, then plug the device in.
