overpayments

it seems that powergen have been taking money from me when they shouldnt have, back in 2003 they took 50 pound from me in may jul and aug, just wondering if anyone knows how much i should ask for in interest/compensation for them having my money for over 6 years, would using the interest on bank charges be a suitable way of working out how much interest i should get back from them? i really do feel that i should get something back from them because of their mistake, but im not sure how to handle it, keeping 150 pound of mine for 6years seems shocking to me, that could have been sitting in my ISA making me some interest, not in their account making them money.
Thanks in advance

    Hi hatingutilities,

Just a few questions, why did E.ON take this money?
Did you have an account with them?
How has it now come to light that this has happened?
Have you been refunded your overpayments?

Once the error has been investigated, we will be able to understand how this happened. The outcome of your complaint does depend on the answers to the questions.

well from what national grid have said as i was deffinatly getting my electric supply through british gas for may 03 - aug 03 im not 100% sure why they continued to take money from me. i thought i had an account with eon/txu/powergen, but both eon and british have confirmed that i didnt have and account for that period with eon. the whole thing has come to light because my partner got a letter from a dept collection agency chasing money owed to British gas, led me to check my bank statments. and they confirmed there was money leaving my account and going to txu/powergen/eon. as of yet i still have not been able to get anyone from eon to find the money on their systems, it is my belief that the money was going into an old wrong account.

and to be honest i sent these statments to eon back in april and i dont understand why that money has not been returned to me together with any interest/compension i im entitled to for eon hanging on to my money for 6 years, that money couldn have been sitting making me interest in my savings account, rather that making a company more money than they are entitiled too.
i think its time that eon and all utilities start looking into just how much money is floating about in their accounts that does not belong to them. in the time its taken for me to get someone at eon to look at this my partner has had a CCJ placed against his name, if id had this money sooner we could have passed it on to the right people and avoided something that is going to effect me and my partner for the next 6 years.

ps its a sad state of things, when i am having to talk about my own personal matters on a forum in order to get someone to help me.

Ususally, when you switch, you get a final bill that shows what you owe (or are owed) and the final amount is taken by DD or refunded. Last time I switched, I got a refund by cheque but in the past it's done by DD. Then you cancel the DD. Are you sure you didn't owe any money when you submitted final meter readings?
  • well you see thats the thing, i didnt change, this is some sales rep crook that conned my partner into giving enough details to swap the supply over to them, and eon. formaly npower, formaly powergen, formaly txu, formaly the artist know as prince of electric to not tell me that ive changed supplier, and to cancel my DD. to be honest the whole thing is a mess, both me and my partner did not ask for this to be changed. it is only the letter from the dept collection agency that has brought to light that i wasnt ment to be paying anything to eon in the first place, only thing i can think the money has been going to the wrong place within eons system. it just goes to show that utility companies are not to be trusted, and in future i will have to check every penny i pay to them on what dates and what its for.

    Did powergen ever supply you?

If powergen weren't your supplier at any times, did you have bills/statements from another supplier with consecutive meter readings, ie no gaps?

    Hi hatingutilities,

Am I right in thinking that a sales rep approached your partner about changing supplier to E.ON, you didn't want to change but gave enough details and your bank details to enable the switch to go ahead?

Did you ever receive any bills or letters from E.ON?

If this is a case an account would have been set up for you and bills would have been produced.

However, it could be the case that a supply for an incorrect address was taken and your Direct Debit was set up, this would mean that your property was not supplied by E.ON but payments were being taken.

I would speak to E.ON again, there is a missing payments department that should be able to locate these payments.

Did you get a response from the letter that you sent in with your bank statements?
