BT - 6 month let and reconnection

Hi all,
We've just moved in to a new place to discover that there's no active BT service. There's a dial tone, but apparently the BT service has ceased. BT have quoted us £125 to reconnect.
We've looked into the free reconnection offer, but, as we are only letting this place for 6 months, wondered if there were any other options.
We asked BT why there was a dial tone, yet we had to pay £125 to reconnect. They said that a previous occupant probably had a service with a different provider. Does anybody know how we could find out the previous provider? If we could find out the previous provider, does anybody know if we would be able to reconnect to them for less than BT's £125.
Many thanks in advance!

Best phone supplier if you only have a 6 month let, is Post Office HomePhone,as they have no minimum contract term.

Give them a call they might even offer you free connection if its a working line.0 -
Hi thriftymonkey
If you decide to go with BT for service there is a 12 month minimum term, it doesn't sound like this will suit as you want a 6 month term but if you move on to a new property you will not be charged for the remainder of the minimum term but you will have a new 12 month term at the new property.
Not sure what the status of the line but I can check this out for you if you pm me the address of the property. There are a lot of telephone providers out there but if you are interested in BT you can get back to me.
Thanks Helen
