Bank took payments on direct debit. Can I get it back?

I had a mortgage with my bank. Bank/account adviser sold me decreasing term life assurance with the bank on the mortgage they held. Paid by direct debit.
Sold house, paid off the mortgage and moved to US. I never cancelled the direct debit. As it was all 'in-house' I thought it would be stopped upon settling the mortgage.
Came back after 4 years and they are still taking the direct debit.
Can I get it back?

I doubt it. You have still had the benefit of the life assurance for the 4 years which would have paid out to your heirs had you died.
And you should really have spotted it before.
It's worth asking though.0
