Scale Wizard???

Hi there,
I have just seen on Ideal World, the 'scale wizard' limescale remover / preventer for £69.99
This is the gadget that runs off the mains then to 12v and 2 wires wrap around the mains water pipe into your house. Apparently after a while your water quality will improve where the limescale has been prevented / removed.
I live in London where we do have hard water.
Are these gadgets any good?
( I have seen similar units around too)
Thanks

This is a copy of my post just a year ago on Monday:-
I also live in the Cotswolds and fitted a Salamander Microwave 22 months ago. Similar to the ScaleWatcher. I can't believe the difference. Used to have to clean the shower head at least every 3 months and haven't had to touch it since. And the kettle is still clean. I bought mine from Travis Perkins at a discount for £49.94 but think the retail price is around £80. I think if you go direct to Salamander they will sell for around what I paid. I seem to remember being told that when I contacted them after I bought mine.
In addition to having a 5 year warranty against faulty workmanship it also has a 6 months unconditional satisfaction or money back guarantee. (Proof of purchase required)

I had better say that I don't have any connection with this company whatsoever except for being a very satisfied customer.
I will add here that another year has gone by and I still haven't had to clean the shower or kettle.

Well without knowing it you may have just opened a great big barrel of monkeys, can of worms, or how ever you want to describe it.
I have been following the 'Water Conditioner' question for at least the past five years on the internet and if other forums are anything to go by I look forward to the following 'debate'.
Just go to Google groups and search for 'water conditioner inhibitor magnetic electronic' there should be enough information there to keep you reading for months.
Do they work? some say yes, some say no, some can prove they do, and some can prove they don't!
If you want to try one why not buy a used one from eBay, on a good day you can buy one for about £20 all in, but how would you ever know if it was broken or not?
Apparently the 'magnetic water conditioner' effect has been argued about since Victorian times and before, so don’t expect a quick answer to your question.
I wait in anticipation.I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes. :doh:0 -

I`d love to know the truth, on friday I noticed two adjacent coffee machines at work had electronic gizmos on the supply pipes. The discussion started there, my question was why not just have one further up the line? The chaps on my course were divided 50/50, only one had installed such a gadget he thought it was working....
My personal thinking is its a little added extra for the plumbers, surely the water companies could just leave a magnet near the reservoir if they really did anything?
Someone with inside knowledge will no doubt be along shortly..
