Supermarket reducing times

I am searching the forums to see if there is a list of the best times that supermarkets reduce stuff to.I'm sure I saw one on here and now can't seem to spot it.I think Adsa is quite late around 9-10.p.m. My sis-in-law was asking me as she is struggling to find cheaper food. She has got her DD and two DGDs living with her at the moment as they are still looking for a place to rent.I know she has a Sainsburys and a Tesco's near to her. My local one doesn't seem to reduce much at all.

We have a new board about Grocery Shopping, so these threads have been moved there ;) I'll move this thread to that board so that you can have a browse.

My local SMs don't do much reducing, either :o

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

I know this is not entirely relevant, JackieO, but I remember in the late 80s I used to live near a Safeway, and they used to do the most incredible reductions - like a £7 joint reduced to 70p... Now that's what I call a bargain. Our supermarkets (Cheshire) seem to just knock off a third, and I rarely get any real bargains these days :(
  • Our nearest Morissons seems to reduce items between 6 & 7 pm, & Thursday seems to be a good day, we've had a fair few bargains there. As an aside, I noticed that their Salmon fillets were cheaper full price than Tesco or Asda.

OP i think it depends varies from 1 supermarket to another, the location they are located in and the stores policy on reductions

It varies from store to store and day to day. The store I work in closes at 8pm and they will generally start reducing around 5pm taking around 20-30% off then around 6.30-7pm they will take the prices right down. Some days if they know they are going to be short staffed in the evening they will take the prices down earlier.

Here's Martin's article on it with... it's also has the link to a forum discussion on the subject under the table.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

    Tesco on a weekday -

Any fresh item that is going out of date the following day, and there is more of than expected sales (I.E. they have 12 bags of sprouts, and they expect to sell 6) will be marked with a 25% reduction.

    Items going on date -

12Midday items will be moved to the relevant reduction bays, with 25% off (previously the stock would be in the right places)

5pm items will be reduced to 50%

7PM items reduced to 60%, tannoy announcements go out if lots of stock. MU's of things like potatoes will be wheeled to the front door to catch peoples attention on the way into the store.

9PM items reduced to 90% off.

That is by in all for fresh food.

Bakery works different as in the basic reduction will be 25% until around 9PM. After that it goes to 75%-90% dependent on amount of stock.

The best time to go into Tesco for reductions however is just after 4PM - because that is when most stores have just finished doing "the rumble" (where they push all items to the front of the shelves to make them look full. On fresh areas, the staff check all the dates, so anything on that days date will be put to one side, then reduced accordingly).

Have you checked out the coupon thread. You can print money off coupons and send for free samples from this thread. Most Tesco's take coupons even if you have not bought the product. You can save pounds every week using coupons.

If you are already aware of the coupon thread I apologise.
