is a survey worth it?

we're buying a house which was built in the mid seventies, and our mortgage company has done a basic valuation on property (they've not even actually visited it), so no survey has been done, mortgage company say its up to us if we get one done or not, we've had two viewings and everything looks okay so should we or would we be wasting our cash?

How much are you buying for?
    Are you a surveyor?
Have you looked under carpets? Any extensions to the house- are they built to right standard etc etc.

Don't mean to be cheeky here but I think you would be pretty stupid not to have one done. This is probably the biggest and most expensive purchase of your life.
What would you do if you found a major fault a few months after purchase? Could you afford perhaps £20k or more to under pin a house that is affected by subsidence for instance?
Complete folly IMO not to have one done even if it is just a House buyers report not a full survey.

I couldn't agree more. I only disagree with the last sentence. Get a full suvey done. If they do find anything wrong you have a great bargaining tool to drop the price and that would pay for the survey anyway.

I am not sure if surveyors look under the carpets. At least the idiot who did the Homebuyers Report on my house didn't, he didn't look in the loft to check the insulation and he said the fuse box had the old fuse wire thingys in them (it actually had trip-switches).

Still, I would definetely agree, get a homebuyers report done.
