Error Windows Defender message

Have just got new Dell Inspirion 1545 laptop, has Vista Home Premium. Have McAfee Security Center installed.
Keep getting the following message on start up.
Windows Defender
Application failed to initialize:0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually.
Tried restarting made no difference, couldn't find anything in Help and Support remotely relevant.
Wondered as I already have the equivalent with McAfee, has McAffee software caused the error?
Do I need Windows Defender as well,& will it slow my system down?
Any advice welcome.

It's more than likely a conflict between the two, although McAfee should have disabled Windows Defender if it's to be the primary security software installed.
Personally, I'd ditch McAfee and install something more effective and keep Windows Defender.0
