JSA and permitted work...

Benefits is not really my thing. On of my sons was made redundant recently and has signed on while looking for work. He has been offered an unconditional place at college studying for an HND in CADD however this is several months away. In the meantime a mate of his has offered him some ad hoc shifts in a shop he owns but the hours will be erratic and less than 12 hours per week.
Is there any way he can continue to sign on to claim JSA while getting ad hoc shifts - he is still looking and applying for permanent jobs but with no success. To loose his JSA in exchange for a pittance while he is looking and available for work seems unfair.
