unpaid direct debit fees!!!? please help

I just got a phone contract a few months ago. I set up a direct debit for this contract which was due on the 8th of may.

Money was tight at the time, so I paid my phone bill a bit early on the tmobile website as I wanted to make sure that I wouldnt spend the money for it. I just got my bank statement and it shows that on the 11th of may i have both a direct debit payment and a returned direct debit receipt.

Then on the 20th of may the same thing again, a direct debit payment and a returned receipt. The activity for the 11th and 20th are for the same thing as all four payments/receipts are for the same value.

Anyway I have been charged £30 for each date! I dont get why im paying the bank £60 of my money :( or why the direct debit came out on the 20th!

What should I do about this? I'm not very good on the phone as I get talked into agreeing and saying ok to things, so I thought I should get some advice

No your in right forum, making payments online will not stop dd also going out especially as you only did it a few days before. So dd went out as normal, cause it bounced they tried to take it again on 20th and again it bounced and another charge. Banks charge £30 whenever a payment bounces.

Think you'll have to chalk it up to experience just contact bank and company to make sure payment goes out as normal next month and they don't try to take it again. You can try to reclaim the bank charges (see martin's article on main site) but takes a while and you have to be in financial hardship.

its a right bummer when this happens. i ahve the same problem sometimes and have been charged wayy too much and too often for my liking. try wriitng to your bank and asking them to waive one of the charges, tell them what happened and maybe they will be kind to you, its worked for me in the past.

Apologies if I've misunderstood but from what I gather you arranged to pay T-Mobile seperately and did not cancel the Direct Debit with the bank? If this is correct then unfortunately the majority of the blame lies with yourself. T-Mobile may take a tiny proportion of the blame for not advising you to cancel, however a bit of common sense could have easily prevented this.

That said, if you have not had charges refunded previously, and if you explain the mistake, the bank may refund one, if not both charges as goodwill. Depends on the bank, but there's no harm in asking - just be honest, explaining you made a mistake and is there anything they can do about the charges.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

i believe he just paid his bill on the t-mobile website but the DD agreement was still in place. OP thought the DD would not be requested because he'd already paid the bill but was mistaken.

from what i see there is no agreement other than the DD agreement.

An alternative is use the direct debit guarantee and dispute the direct debit request - explain to the bank that you had already paid the sum owed and the direct debit should not have taken place. Following on the two debit attempts and hence the charges should be considered void.

That's how I understood it, cheers.

  • Yes, I did not cancel the direct debit with the bank as I thought that the payment would not be requested since I had already paid t mobile, and that since I had arranged the dd with t mobile i did not have to inform the bank.
