Please help. Worried about credit check :(

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can advise, I'm feeling pretty rock bottom at the moment. I've posted recently about looking into bankruptcy and have decided I'll be taking the plunge on the back of my divorce and my ex's refusal to stick to a DMP with me that would run forever.

I've taken my house off the market and cancelled my mortgage payments with the intention to try to get into a rental within the next 2 weeks (before I miss my first mortgage payment).

I'm expecting my credit rating to be utter pants, I don't have any CCJ's, just a default but a lot of debt and just been making token payments to loans/creds.

I have my first appointment for a rental viewing on Monday and I'm feeling gloomy about it already, I sound like poor me I know, but I just imagine failing credit check and being asked for money in advance that I won't have. My life has been so dark and violent for the last 12 years that I'm so utterly desperate to be on my own for the first time and only allow trusted people over my door, I can't cope with not getting out :( I feel like I have the greatest feeling imaginable at my fingertips (freedom and safety) and I have no control over gripping it.

So far they have asked for £70 admin fee, the £525 for the rent and it'll be £100 for a holding fee. Will the £170 together be lost if I fail the credit? Am I worth checking my credit on experian first?

I couldn't afford any rent in advance and the person I considered for a guarantor is concerned at the news I will go bankrupt and how that will affect their credit? Can anyone answer this?

My father owns his home outright but is retired, he is very willing to be guarantor for me although it upsets me, he is practically begging me - would I be able to offer him as a guarantor without having employment?

I'd really appreciate anyone's experience. Thanks.

Hi Madame-George, If i remember correctly the credit check is more about checking your identity rather than your credit-worthy-ness. I could be wrong though.
    hope you are doing ok

I'm sorry but I don't know, but I just wanted to post hugs until someone can help you .
  • Thanks both for the replies, Elaine and Miss Ratty, I guess I'm having a bad day and needing a hug :o

I started crying on a packed train on the way home from work, think I'm close to losing the plot lol.

I really feel able to afford on my own and I'm well planned for the BR, but I'm scared it'll all be out of my hands and I won't be given the chance. I can't afford to be trying out all the letting agencies.

I'm sorry to hear about the tough time you're going through. Please know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Have you tried to get advice from charities like CAB, CCCS & national debt helpline? Also you could approach womens charities to see if they can help, some unions (if you're a member) have hardship funds to tide people over. I'm not sure about BR impact on a guarantor. I've read some people tell the estate agent/ landlord about their situation and still manage to get a descent place to live. Could you stay with your dad whilst you save the money for deposit and rent? I hope my suggestions are helpful and best wishes.

  • Really appreciate the reply iquit. I've been assisted by Payplan, National Debtline and CAB. I don't know that I would be entitled to anything through a charity, not really considered it. I guess I've thought that people are more entitled to that support and I can cope with it because I'm so used to it - it's my life.

I have a family member that would consider being guarantor if it was only liability for the debt and not an association with my BR.

My father would definately support me as guarantor, it would break his heart not to. I'd move in with him but for, he's a long way from my work and he has a small one bedroom flat, there's no room for me really.

Thanks for your support, really kind :)

    Hiya,

Would you consider renting privately? Rather than through an estate agent....I've always been deterred from using estate agents for lettings as they charge through the nose for not alot. You also have more chance of getting more space for less money when going private. I've had 3 private landlords in the past without any problems with either of them.
With regard to the money issue, have you looked into a Crisis Loan from then Social? You don't have to be on benefits to apply/get a crisis loan, it is a no interest loan for emergencies such as these and as it's with the social, you can practically choose your repayment schedule so that it is comfortable for you.
    Hope that helps.
  • Hi Hannah,

I've never heard of the crisis loan, I'll have to look into it definately. All my family stay far from my work so it would be such a strain to travel, I'm so hoping I get an approval with a letting agent or somehow get the fund for another try - so the loan I could maybe consider - thanks for suggesting.

I've been looking private, but I'm unlucky with what is available, I'm looking for unfurnished which is making it harder as I have furniture to take.

    MG.

If your father is in a position to lend you six months rent up front it will make things easier. You could then repay him on a monthly basis.

Thanks, he's not I'm afraid. He would if he could. He would have to take credit to get it and I don't want that for him. Is it likely they'll only accept a guarantor in employment?
