I got a new computer at work today and it's got Word 2007 on it which is completely different to the old Word that I am used to.

A very trivial thing, but does anyone know if you can set the margins in inches rather than cms in Word 2007? I can't find it anywhere and it's driving me nuts:mad:

Thanks.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

If you click on the circle in the top/left corner and go to options, under the advanced section there is a display list.
    Units are in there.

    It's hideous isn't it Melbury?!

I have the same issue with my laptop! Luckily, I have been used to using the keystrokes to access many of the 2003 functions, ALT+T+O will bring up the original Tools, Options menu - Advanced gives you the option of changing the display measurement units (scroll down the dialog).

To access it alternatively, select Word Options next to Exit in the Office menu (the strange new menu that has replaced the File menu).

Make sure you save in 97/2003 format else your colleagues on older versions won't be able to open your files (without a converter anyway). It's a pain.

I was going to suggest something different, but rmg1's suggestion is better.

I found that once I'd spent some time with Office 2007, it's actually very intuitive. I much prefer it to 2003, now.

I have to say Nick, I still hate it and have been using it for 14 months now! It's always a relief when I use another PC and find it has 2003 loaded.

I particularly hate the table of contents, styles and tables functions. Converting a table back to text seems to have disappeared altogether - I cannot seem to get it to appear on any menus whatever element of the table I select!

Get with the times you Luddite :p Ribbon bars are the future!

My company hasn't rolled out 2007 yet. Think they are worried about all the support desk calls asking how to do things.

I've got used to it now. Prefer it to the old style.

It's not the interface that is the problem - it is the degradation of functionality and removal of cross-Windows compatibility (Microsoft are the worst culprits for introducing inconsistencies in their interfaces and yet have the nerve to position themselves as judge and jury for other software that operates on their operating systems to declare them as being "non-Microsoft standard").

I think your company is right to be worried, as a Windows solution architect and ex-Microsoft Certified Trainer of 20 years standing who has used/trained/developed Word since it was in DOS format, I have found the advanced features in word to be chockful of bugs and inconcistencies. Yet few of these features are new - they worked in previous versions!

If you are just typing simple documents - fine, but if you are a trained typist who doesn't rely on using the mouse to find their way around a PC screen, and a regular user of advanced document formatting such as styles, outline numbering, tables of contents, footnotes, text and image frames, odd/even page formatting, section based formatting, etc etc, then it is not an upgrade.

But hell, if you are happy that it looks "cool" - good for you!:D
