Bosch failed now Baffled by Ovens how do you buy one?

Options
My Bosch has packed up,

First the element - got it fixed, then the grill and now the oven won't heat. The repair guy says get a new one, It hasn't worn well as its had minimal use. I'm now a bit suspicious of buying labels.

I don't want to have anything that feels crappy as I'm now cooking loads. A bit hesistant to buy expensively which may get crapped on if I have to move out when tracker mortgage rate expires.

What's the deal with self cleaning. One site says cost a few pence. Another says takes 4-5 hours at huge temperatures.

Also another says enamel liners allow gunk to build up behind! Uggh!

Is Ikea FRAMTID OV A11 S any good? Its A rated energy but I can't work out if its a conventional or fan assisted which I hear are not great. Basically after hours on the web, I'm very confused. Would like a good oven with timer, preferably steel look , easy to clean timer for not more than £220-250.

Do you need the extended guarantee?

Better to go Bosch with less bells or something else with more bells? Any help appreciated. Would love to bake a cake for a friends party next week.. Lost 8lbs by being mega busy.

Assume the BOSCH warranty has run out?

I had an AEG single oven - part of my Magnet kitchen. Dark brown, in a split level housing. One day I pulled down the pull down door and it pulled right out and shattered on my feet. Fortunately I was not injured just grazed.

Fast forward - needed new oven in a hurry. No spare money. Ended up with a split level dark brown Moffat from Wickes. it has a timer. It is not a fan oven - I think they do one - but I don't like them. I do A LOT of cooking. The Moffat has been brilliant only problem is internal grill does not drop down to clean but I think it does on later models. Wickes do a Moffat conventional stainless steel single oven for £165; fan model is £249.

Alternatively you could buy one of these new multi purpose jobs. You have more flexibility if you are installing a stand alone oven than fitting one into an existing housing.

Ikea's ovens are made by Whirlpool and are about as reliable as normal Whirlpool ovens (not very)

Wickes Moffat ovens are made by Electrolux, in one of their out sourced factories in South America, BUT are actually very good value for money. If you go for the conventional oven you will get 5 years plus usage out of it no problem and it's going to cost you less than £200. DO NOT get a Moffat fan oven, it wont last more than a couple of years...

You'll be able to get a Smeg, Caple, or CSA oven for between £200 and £250, but I honestly wouldn't bother.

As for self cleaning - the pyrolytic systems used by the likes of Neff, Siemens, AEG etc are actually very good, but then you are definitely going to blow your budget. Getting a very cheap self cleaner would be a waste of time
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Many thanks :easter_ba:easter_ba:easter_ba maybe I can start baking sooner. Usignuolo, for that will take look, will have to do some other dessert as this is taking longer than I reckoned, Just realised the sales are around the corner!

  • Interesting never thought of Wickes, possibly as not one around me but will look today for nearest one. :easter_ba

  • Oops, yes the guarantee did run out. I had thought you would get a good ten years of heavy use out of a Bosch with maybe a few minor repairs along the way.

Electric fan assisted ovens are great. I used to be a fan of gas only, but having had an electric fan assisted oven for the past 6yrs or so I've truly been converted. The general consensus seems to be that the ideal set up is a gas hob & fan assisted oven & I have to admit that I agree.

When I moved here last year & had a new kitchen installed I chose a Neff fan assisted oven. As Neff offered a 2yr guarantee that helped me make my choice.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Thanks cattie did you find it problematic baking as I hear now that conventional is best for baking! Cheers

I don't do much baking I'm afraid so can't help you there. I know with the Neff ovens they have something called cirotherm which is said to improve the cooking process over other fan assisted ovens. More info here. http://www.neff.co.uk/CircoTherm.html
