home insurance rip off

Hi

I wondered if someone could maybe answer this question for me.

I have been going through all my old paperwork dating back to 1999. I came across 2 statements from Barclays relating to my mortgage. one from Aug 99-Aug00 and the other Aug 00- Aug01. Now the statements showed what mortgage payments had been made during the 2 years but also showed an amount for almost £60 per month for buildings and contents insurance. Now I know I never requested any insurance cover from Barclays as I already had this in place with the AA and it was not a requirement of the mortgage. My estimate is that Barclays has stealthly charged me for this insurance and charged me almost £1400 for insurance over a period of 2 years that I never asked for or required.

My question is, do I have a case to request a refund or is it too late, i.e the period of time that has gone by since.

I had no idea Id paid for this cover and find it very under handed that I was charged for it without my knowledge.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You could try but I suspect it is to late as they (And possibly the AA iif your policy with them ran out over around 4 years ago) may not have kept their records for you

Do you have copies of the mortgage application forms / offer / acceptance forms at all? These might help prove your case.

Unfortunately you are now outside the 6 year limitation period but I do seem to recall Diane Wright (iirc) in Questions of Cash - Sunday Times money supplement had a similar case recently and made a recovery.

Have a look at the Financial Ombudsman Service site as well. They have a publications section you can search to see how the FOS approaches this problem.
