    Hi Katie,

I really like strawberries, but they are perhaps out for this year. I'm not sure that I have enough room for beans, but peas would be good.
Thank you for replying. If it's not too much trouble, then if you could look at the packets, that would be great.
Thank you for your help :)

    Hi Nic82,

No trouble at all, I have just looked and I think you still have time for everything I have planted - I am not sure about strawberries cos I don't have any of those. Anyhow according to my packets (!) you can still do courgettes (april to may), salad leaves (plant outside from march to sept), tumbler tomatoes (to end of april, good for pots/hanging baskets), oregano, coriander, mint (and i guess any other herb!), spinach, rocket, and the only think i have for which the sowing time has passed is aubergine but i think that's because of the particular variety - i have another pack somewhere that i know i saved because you can plant it later and i had run out of windowsill space!

    hope that helps, good luck!

  • Someone advise me, I want to plant for this year and from what Ive read Im running out of time! Where do I start? Forgive me for sounding a total plonker, but do I just get some seeds and plant themin some soil?!?! And what would be the best things (idiot-proof might be a better word!) to start off with? Thanks!

    Hi Katie,

Sorry for the late thanks. I've only just had chance to pop back on and read this.

That is really helpful. I'm going to go seed shopping this weekend and then go sowing-mad!

    Thank you again

No probs :). Also I found this recently and have just posted it on another thread, it gives a chart of sowing and flowering times so you can see what you can plant on a month-by-month basis (not sure if it is skewed towards the varieties Suttons have or anything but it's a good rough guide). Scroll down for the veg section, it comes after the flowers:

    Hi all,

if myself and the gf ever get into our new house we would like to grow some fruit / veg.

The only problem is a) will we ever get into our new house? b) we will only have a small vege patch? c) we aren't too good with plants and flowers (we spend time looking after them but they tend to die) d) we won't have many gardening tools etc.

    So....

Basically, if anyone has any recommendations of plants that I could start now in a sunny windowsill with a view to moving outside in about a month (or longer if necessary) and that will not take up too much space and are hardy enough not to die on us, then I would love to hear!

    Thanks

Most veg/herbs will easily need a month on the windowsil before potting on, planting out. What about a few tomatoes (they are very good growers so not too many!) and some herbs. You can grow the tomatoes in a grow-bag (3 plants per bag) and the herbs in a pot (you can get special terracota planters that keep them separate, or use ordinary pots.

And for fruit, you could sow some strawberry seeds, or even buy plants from the garden centre now. All can move with you in a month or so - as long as you take no more than 2-3 months you should be OK. (but if the move date is uncertain, do you have somewhere outside they can go when they grow too large, just in case?)

    Thanks for the help annie-c.

We live in a flat at the mo so no where outside at all!

I won't bother with tomatoes, my parents have a huge greenhouse that they allways grow hundreds of plants in (which they get off my grandad :D ) so I will get lots of free tomatoes off them anyway.

Might try some herbs and some strawberries though - where is cheap to get seeds from now?

  • Ive just done my first bit of gardening and the woman at the garden centre was highly amused at the flowerpots I thought I was meant to sow the seeds in! I've now got carrot seeds and spring onions in a tray, are they okay outside? (Ive just bought mini greenhouse type thing to keep them in).

How long do you think it'll take before I ought to put them in the proper garden??
And is there such thing as potato seeds/bulbs or do you have to use old spuds?? I looked everywhere in the garden centre and couldn't find any, not could I find any sign of how to grow mushrooms?!?!?!?

Lettuces are very easy to grow. just get a few packs of seeds from the garden centre ( Wilko's do great priced seeds too).
My faves inc buttercunch, salad bowl, little gem, so many to choose from - you can also get packs of mixed seeds, and you end up with lovely mixtures - just like those bags on sale in the supermarket @ £1.50+ a bag.
The pack of seeds cost around £1 - £1.50 and contail 500 ish seeds - last you all year.
Sow them in those little cell trays or save your loo roll tubes and stand them in seed trays. They can be planted in the ground later, but can also be planted in plastic troughs (poundland sell good ones for - well £1!!:rotfl: ).
If you've never grown lettuces before - try it - you'll never eat the c**p they sell in supermarkets again.
Same can be said for all veggies ESP toms.
Give it a go guys 'n gals.
